Maybe you’ve just started a new business, or maybe you’ve always dreamed of starting an online boutique but never found the courage to pull the trigger. Maybe you’re feeling super stoked and empowered right now, or maybe you’re doubting your abilities at the moment. No matter where you’re at, here are 10 things EVERY current or aspiring female entrepreneur should know:
1. You’re the master of your own destiny…
Your business can be whatever you want it to be. It’s easy to get caught up in your day-to-day responsibilities, or in the trap of comparing your achievements to others… but only YOU can decide what success looks and feels like for you. Make sure you’re always making intentional choices about how to run and grow your business.
2. But you don’t have to do everything by yourself.
Sure, you’re running the show – but that doesn’t mean you also have to be the fulfillment specialist, the content creator, the customer service representative, and everything else. It isn’t a sign of weakness to ask for help – it’s a sign of wisdom. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of your day-to-day responsibilities, hire someone to take some off your plate.
3. You’re never going to be 100% certain of anything.
All business involves some amount of risk. Sometimes those risks will pay off, sometimes you’ll wish you’d done things differently. But if you try and wait until you’re 100% sure of something, you’ll miss so many opportunities that could have really paid off. Don’t wait until you can see the end from the beginning – you’ll figure those things out when you come to them.
4. You’re gonna make a lot of mistakes.
It doesn’t matter how smart and talented and brilliant you are – when it comes to starting a business, everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes, they’re huge mistakes. But the best entrepreneurs bounce back from them. Mistakes aren’t always a sign you’re headed in the wrong direction – more often than not, they’re just a sign that you’re learning, growing, and trying new things. Stay resilient and stay humble. Own your mistakes, do whatever it takes to fix them, then move on,
5. The people you surround yourself with can make or break you.
You’re just not going to feel like an ultra-capable girl boss if all of your friends keep expressing doubt in your abilities. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and energize you. Don’t be afraid to cut negative people out of your life – it’ll just leave more space for people who encourage you to be your best self. 6. Being your own boss can be tricky.
If your boss at your 9-5 job insisted you work until 11 pm one night, you’d probably have no problem telling him off. But when YOU’RE your boss, it’s harder to be disciplined & maintain a healthy work-life balance. Zoom out for a moment, set boundaries, and check-in with yourself often.
7. Regret is way, way scarier than failure.
It’s way better to look back and think “Whoops” than “What if?”. Failure isn’t the end. In fact, it’s crucial to success. Studies show that people who have started a business that ultimately failed are actually MORE likely to start a successful business in the future. In the end, you’ll either win or learn – and both of those outcomes are extremely valuable.
8. Motion creates motion.
The hardest step is the first one. It’s way, waaaay easier to keep moving when you’re already moving. You’ll be surprised at the things you learn & the opportunities that present themselves once you’re headed in the right direction. Have the courage to take the first step and don’t worry about the rest until you get to it.
9. It’s never too late to make a change.
It doesn’t matter how old you are, how experienced you are, or how deep into your current career you are – it’s never too late to change your life for the better. Even starting a business isn’t a final decision – you’ll always retain the power to change your life and your situation.
